Bicycle Helmets: Just How Important is it to Wear One?

Posted by Dev Sethi | Apr 16, 2014 | 0 Comments

According to a survey from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, only 50% of bicyclists routinely wear a helmet. While most states do not require adults to wear a helmet, statistics show that doing so could significantly reduce the number of bicycle-related injuries and fatalities that are experienced throughout the country each year. In fact, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have reported that mandatory helmet use could prevent between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries annually. Considering the fact that nearly 400,000 children are sent to emergency rooms with bicycle-related injuries every year, this doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Research clearly shows that bicycle helmets are 85-88% effective in mitigating serious brain injuries, so the Tucson personal injury attorneys at Kinerk, Schmidt & Sethi, PLLC encourage you to strap on a helmet the next time you or your child jumps on a bike. Doing so could be the difference between life and death, so there is no reason why you should neglect to put your safety first. Bicyclists are already at enough of a disadvantage when they are involved in an accident with a much larger vehicle.
