Preventing Infant Bathtub Drownings

Posted by Dev Sethi | Apr 16, 2014 | 0 Comments

Approximately 87 children drown in and around their homes every single year under the age of five. 80% of these devastating drownings happen in the bathtub, where babies are often left unsupervised and can easily slip under the shallow water. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a child drowns in a bathtub, bucket, toilet, or landscape pond about once every four days. The sad truth is that almost all of these deaths can be prevented.

Most of the time, these drownings happen when a mother or father leaves the bathroom and the baby is unsupervised. Oftentimes parents don't leave the bathroom for a long time. Instead, they may leave to go answer the phone or the door, or will take off to get a towel for the baby. In order to prevent these devastating accidents from happening, it is essential that you take the child with you when you leave. You will want to make sure that your baby is always supervised.

Children can drown silently and quickly, especially infants. Only five minutes away from the bathtub may be enough to lead to a serious fatality. Also, parents and caretakers must be careful to never leave their baby alone near a container of liquid such as a sink full of water or a landscaped pond. Also, parents should never leave their children in the bathtub under the care of a young child, as that child may leave or may be unable to pull the baby up should he or she fall face down into the water.
